Facebook’s workforce grew more diverse when it embraced remote work
Like many companies, Facebook dramatically restructured to remote work during the pandemic. This shift brought an unexpected benefit of helping the company recruit and retain more workers from underrepresented backgrounds. According to Facebook’s annual progress report, jobs made available through remote hiring were most likely to be filled by women, people of color, people with disabilities, and veterans. As for the existing staff, those from underrepresented groups were more likely than average to favor working remotely. Some employees may find a remote job particularly appealing, as it can be particularly useful for people who are likely to face subtle as well as frequently unconscious expressions of bias and microaggression at work.
