Diversity, Equity & Inclusion News: Australia – Ageism in the Workplace

Speaking up about Australia’s silent bias

What is Ageism? WHO defines Ageism as the stereotypes (how we think), prejudice (how we feel) and discrimination (how we act) towards others or oneself based on age. In the U.S., the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission states that the Age Discrimination in Employment Act (ADEA) forbids age discrimination against people who are age 40 or older. It does not protect workers under the age of 40, although some states have laws that protect younger workers from age discrimination. It is not illegal for an employer to favour an older worker over a younger one, even if both workers are age 40 or older. In Australia, a study by the University of South Australia shows that one-third of Australians believe they have experienced age-related discrimination while employed or job-seeking.
