Introduction

Transportation connects the lives of everyone bounded by distance. It keeps the busy world moving and serves a significant role in our daily routines and transactions. Automotive made it easier for us to go to our destinations, whether for academic and work-related purposes or personal tenacities.

However, as we enjoy the perks these vehicles brought to us, our environment tends to be at stake with the air pollutants buildup caused by certain gases these vehicles emit. One of the most well-known contributors to greenhouse gasses and the warming of our Earth is carbon dioxide.

s climate change continues to be evident, automotive companies and car manufacturers began several environmental sustainability strategies. One of them is decarbonization. In this article, we’re going to recon decarbonization in-depth as a strategy for a sustainable environment.

What is Decarbonization? 

Imagine, every year, a single and ordinary vehicle releases about 4.6 metric tons of carbon dioxide in the air. Considering this, how much more carbon dioxide is emitted if we combined the number of vehicles worldwide? 

In the United States, the transportation sector ranked first on an annual report about greenhouse gas emissions’ primary sources. Transportation such as cars, trucks, planes, ships, and trains generates the most carbon dioxide released into the atmosphere. When these gasses build up, it causes heat to be trapped inside, which leads to the rise in global temperature.

Global warming is driven by our daily activities, which involve machines and equipment powered by non-renewable energy such as fossil fuels. These fuels release carbon dioxide and other gasses when burned, which adds to greenhouse gasses that cause global warming.

The warming of the Earth’s environment is the reason for the melting of ice in the polar regions, which leads to the rise of the seawater level. This also brings more catastrophic events such as raging floods and tremendous weather conditions caused by climate change’s unceasing existence.

With that in context, major groups and advocates of climate change push decarbonization as a major strategy to mitigate the world’s carbon footprint.

Instead of harboring the traditional way of using non-renewable sources of energy, experts see the use of renewable energy to cut carbon emissions. This involves the use of electricity instead of fossil fuels and altering to a cleaner source of energy.

Engine decarbonization

Most of our activities rely on the use of vehicles for transportation purposes. Study shows that around 1.4 billion cars are moving along the roads. With that bulky carbon generator, it is not hard to explain why climate change is still evident in this busy and active modern world.

Like how we want ourselves and our things to be always in a healthy and robust state, we should also be responsible for taking care of our environment.

Engine decarbonization provides both. As we keep our cars and vehicles in sturdy and good physical condition, we also don’t harm the rest of our domains. Despite this, the concept of engine decarbonization has undergone through series of debates.

What borders car owners from engine decarbonization are its processes. The process removes carbon deposits stuck on the engine’s cylinder head, pistons, and other working components to enhance its overall performance.

Methods of Engine Decarbonizing

Decarbonizing an engine comes in two ways. It can either be done mechanically or with the use of the chemical. 

Mechanical Decarbonization of Engine

Mechanical decarbonizing of the engine requires an experienced mechanic in doing this technique. Basically, the working mechanic manually removes carbon deposits that have blocked pistons and cylinder heads. However, this procedure must only be done with an expert, or your engine will end up broken. 

Chemical Decarbonization of Engine

The other technique to decarbonize your car is through the use of the chemical. This chemical is added to the compound and the fuel, breaking down carbon deposits formed within various parts of the engine. After the breakdown process, carbon deposits are discharged with the exhaust gases. 

Benefits of decarbonizing an engine

As vehicles and automotive mobiles owners, we always want our cars to be in good condition. Taking the road smoothly gives us not only fulfillment and contentedness but also boosts our self-esteem.

Decarbonizing your engine can assure you all of that. A decarbonized engine is clean and free of carbon deposits in and out. Decarbonizing diminishes your engine’s noise and vibration and enhances your vehicle’s overall performance, which gives you a breezy ride.  

However, most car manufacturers do not recommend each car owners to undergo engine decarbonization. It is still their choice to decide. Modern cars are designed to reduce the amount of emitted carbon and avoid the buildup of carbon deposits.

Nonetheless, it is still our responsibility as car owners to manage our vehicle’s performance and activities, which should direct on our environment’s sustainability.

Deep decarbonization

For years, we are tackling different strategies to reduce carbon emissions to slow down or even stop our environment’s rapid deterioration. People are becoming aware of climate change as a global concern as we are all contributing to the massive carbon footprint that is still rising to this day.

This problem in our environment is more intricating than ever. Some nations started little by little in making actions. But the thing is, to solve this global obstruction, we must combine all our efforts and come up with a macro-level solution.

Deep decarbonization is one of those strategies that climate change advocates are pushing. The 2015 Paris Agreement is a framework that encourages everyone to mitigate climate change by abating t carbon dioxide emissions into our atmosphere. This refers to a bolder goal to restrict the constantly rising global temperature caused by global warming that continuously harms our environment. 

However, limiting the warming of our Earth to 1.5⁰ Celsius or even lesser requires massive efforts from governments worldwide. Nevertheless, cutting carbon emission is also a complex thing to do, considering that our economy is deeply ingrained in the modernized industry and various technological advancements.

Experts say that from 1990, the global carbon emission rose to 41 percent and are still escalating since then. It is not surprising because we are now experiencing an adverse effect on our environment.

Nonetheless, deep decarbonization will only occur if the world’s governments open their doors to strategizing new possibilities to save the Earth. Starting a courageous leap despite big and challenging adjustments often ends up with a brighter outcome. 

Conclusion

As the highest life-form walking on Earth, we are responsible for sustaining and properly managing our environment. However, instead of nurturing it, we deteriorated our air, lands, water with our selfishness and greed. 

Development should not always come to be environmentally destructive. We can always start living with these pieces of machinery and technologies that, in the first place, provided us ease and comfort. Nevertheless, taking action on the problem that we have started is the next right thing.

Mere moralizing, as well as planning, is not enough to achieve a zero net carbon emission. What we need is an action that will enable us to rise from the goals that we have.
