You’ll see beds made out of recycled cardboard, podiums made of donated plastic, torchbearers’ uniforms made from recycled bottles, Olympic torches made from recycled construction waste from the temporary housing from the 2011 Japan earthquake and tsunami, zero-emission autonomous and electric e-Palette vehicles that transport athletes around the Village, and medals made from old mobile phones and other e-waste, etc.

Janae Marie “Kroc” Kroczaleski is a transgender woman who also identifies as gender fluid and non-binary. Janae was a former US Marine and world record weightlifter. When she came out as being a transgender, her sponsors abandoned her, she was disowned by her parents, and banned from competing.

Inuk leader and former ambassador Mary Simon has been appointed as Canada’s 30th governor general. She is Canada’s first Indigenous governor general. She is bilingual in English and Inuktitut but never had the opportunity to learn Canada’s other official language – French while she studied in the school that has been the subject of lawsuits over the mistreatment of students by administrators.
